They assume that the role is like a calling. Consider casting. Casting directors do a pretty good job. If leadership is not a role but a job indeed our batting average will be about average. I would guess based on my forty five years of working directly with people miscast in a leadership role that neither the interviewers nor the candidate is working with a meaningful role description.
